To qualify for a rebate, a purchaser must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a California residential consumer with a valid California residential address.
  • Must purchase a new qualifying appliance model to replace an existing appliance of the same type.
  • Must make the purchase within the specified rebate offer period from a California retailer, dealer or contractor.
  • Must recycle the replaced appliance with an eligible recycler, consistent with California law.
  • Must submit a completed rebate application to the Energy Commission’s rebate services provider within 120 days of the date of the appliance purchase that includes proof of purchase and recycling.

Purchase Restrictions:

  • Rebates are limited to one appliance of each category per California residential address. A “residential address” may include a detached single family home, a condominium unit, an apartment unit, or a mobile home (post office box addresses do not qualify).  Tenants may be required to obtain the property owner’s permission to install the appliance.
  • The appliance must be installed in the residence prior to submittal of the complete rebate application claim.
  • Rebates will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis based on the post-marked date of a complete rebate application received by the rebate processor.  Rebate applications submitted outside the specified timeframes will be disqualified.
  • Rebates will not be issued for appliances purchased before or after the rebate offer period.
  • The purchaser must allow access to an inspector to verify installation, as required.

At this point, the application process is still a little unclear.  A rebate form will likely be available online at http://www.cash4appliances.org/consumers/index.html.  The process may also be a new web-based/mail-in process which requires homeowners to complete a web-based initial application and submit it electronically to determine rebate level and initiate processing.

Note that the rebate application will require a “paid” invoice from the contractor, AHRI certification and an executed building permit.

As more information becomes available, we will update you accordingly.  You can also review the California Energy Commission press release online at http://www.energy.ca.gov/releases/2010_releases/2010-07-16_cash4appliances_plus_ma.html.
